The History of MiHSEF: Building a Legacy in High School Esports

The Michigan High School Esports Federation (MiHSEF) was idealized in 2018. Recognizing the growing popularity of esports and its potential to engage students in meaningful ways, a community of educators embarked on a mission to create a structured and supportive environment for scholastic esports in Michigan.

Founding Year: 2019

MiHSEF’s journey began with the first season in Fall 2019, with a clear vision to provide a safe, competitive, and educational platform for high school students passionate about esports. This initiative quickly garnered the support of several forward-thinking schools across Michigan.

 

Founding Schools

The pioneering schools that joined MiHSEF in its inaugural year were:

  • Perry High School
  • Gull Lake High School
  • Loy Norrix High School
  • Midland High School
  • Charlotte High School
  • Pinckney High School
  • Kensington Woods
  • Northwest High School
  • Grass Lake
  • U of D Jesuit High School
  • Saginaw Heritage High School

These schools, along with their dedicated educators and enthusiastic students, laid the foundation for what MiHSEF would become.

First Year Success: 160 Students

In its first year, MiHSEF attracted 160 students from the founding schools, showcasing the significant interest and excitement surrounding high school esports. The initial competitions not only highlighted the students’ gaming skills but also fostered teamwork, strategic thinking, and sportsmanship.

Growth and Impact

Since its inception, MiHSEF has grown exponentially, continually adding new schools and expanding its reach. The federation’s success can be attributed to its focus on creating an inclusive environment where students from diverse backgrounds can come together, compete, and thrive.
